The Final Day at the GKA Freestyle World Cup Gran Canaria

A last roll of the dice on Final Day at GKA Gran Canaria

    Sunday 16th June 2019

1). Final Day at GKA Freestyle World Cup Gran Canaria

Yesterday, on Saturday, the women made it through to the final rounds of the competition where Mikaili Sol overcame fellow Brazilian Bruna Kajiya to take her first event win of the 2019 GKA Kite World Tour season.

An attempt was also made to run the final three men’s heats, but the wind just wasn't strong enough. However, because the men’s division had reached the semi-finals, the eight riders who'd made it that far were guaranteed an official result, so the focus had instead been on finishing the women’s competition.

2). Set Teixeira sprints back upwind during yesterday's attempt at the men's semi-finals

Today though, on the final day of the event window, it all came down a last ditch effort to reach the men's final. With clear skies and none of the clouds that had been suppressing the wind this week, things were looking positive.

3). Arthur Guillebert - good to go!

Unfortunately though, at 19:00 after a long day of waiting, it was clear the wind just was not going to reach the required strength for the men to hit the water.

The riders would not be able to compete to see who would become the first ever male champion of the GKA Freestyle World Cup Gran Canaria.

However, there is still an official result from the men's division and the below eight riders will all share first place rankings (and an equal share of the prize money) from this event.

The GKA Kite World Tour is in Sotavento, Fuerteventura, this week for the fourth GKA Freestyle World Cup stop of the season. 22 men and 12 women registered for the event this morning at the Rene Egli Watersports centre, and there's a host of riders in the ranks who are out to unseat current tour leaders Carlos Mario and Mikaili Sol when the main event begins.

1). More flags than the United Nations!
In the men’s division, Carlos remains unbeaten this season but challenging conditions at the last two freestyle events haven’t enabled the men’s division to complete a final, so he retains the lead by default.
That means Maxime Chabloz, who came painfully close to beating Carlos in the only completed final of the season at Leucate in round one, is just 33 points behind and well within striking distance. Highly on-form Italian charger Gianmara Coccoluto looks odds-on for an event win this season and isn't far away in third, and there’s a tight points margin between him and Liam Whaley in fourth too.
Any one of these riders could make life hard for Mario here in Fuerte!

2). Carlos Mario sends one for the boys / buoys
In the women’s division, Mikaili has a bigger lead on points having been in two finals this season (one of which she won at the GKA Gran Canaria) but fellow Brazilian Bruna Kajiya and Pippa van Iersel from the Netherlands are on her tail.
Mikaili may look hard to beat, but she hasn’t had her customary clean sweep of victories so far this year so her first place position is by no means unassailable.

      3). Mikaili Sol during today's warm-up session
So, that means we’re in for a potentially pivotal week here at Playa de Sotavento, with two big double events still to come in Mauritius and Dakhla, plus Brazil still potentially in the calendar at the end of the season.
There's a plentiful supply of Calima trade winds on the forecast and the main event's set to start tomorrow at 10:30 GMT.

The fourth freestyle fixture of the season, the GKA Freestyle World Cup Fuerteventura, fires up on Friday and will run from the 19-24th July.
It'll take place at the legendary Sotavento, in the south of the island, a notoriously windy location that has played host to countless kiting and windsurfing World Tour stops over the years.
After two events with challenging conditions, Brazilian phenoms Carlos Mario and Mikaili Sol are the top ranked riders, although their leads are anything but secure with a host of talented chargers in hot pursuit.
Besides the freestyle action, there's also a Big Air Invitational coming up at the event which will see strapless freestyle riders and freestyle kiteboarders competing together in mixed teams to see who can stick the most outrageous big air tricks. It's the first time something like this has happened in competition, so it should be something special!
Head to the official event page to find out more and to tune into the LIVESTREAM once the action starts rolling!
