  1. Golden Gruber grabs victory in kitefoiling nailbiter. 16 October 2019 1). Florian Gruber Former world and European champion Florian Gruber (GER) won two consecutive races in the final to become the first men’s Kitefoil Racing ANOC World Beach Games champion. As the second-placed qualifier, Gruber had to win two races before highest qualifier Nicolas Parlier [FRA] won one in order to fulfil his gold medal dream. In a tight first race, the German edged past Parlier at speeds of around 50 kilometres per hour to keep himself in contention, with just six seconds separating first and fourth place. In the second, Parlier missed a mark and had to tack back, leaving the race open for the German to speed past and claim a sensational victory. 2). 2019 ANOC World Beach Games Speaking after his win, Gruber said, “I wouldn’t believe it if someone had told me before the race. Nico had a really good regatta and I had also some really good races so we were battling a lot, and then to start with a win in the final, we were tied, so it was all for the last race. “I just had a good start and I think almost a perfect race, no single mistake, and it was nice to have a close fight until the last round.” He added that the windy conditions at Katara Beach, pushing highs of 11 knots today, also helped. “It was my conditions today. I really liked it and I had a really good feeling. I train quite often with the 21 square metre kite. It was a bit shifty and patchy out there and in Bavaria on the lakes [where I train] I have these conditions, so I think it was good for me.” 3). 2019 ANOC World Beach Games The Frenchman outperformed Gruber throughout the opening series races, taking four bullets and a second place to the German’s one bullet, two second and one third places, but nonetheless said he was pleased with his result. “On a shorter course that is only six minutes long, it’s hard to come back if you make one mistake” he commented. “But Florian did really good racing and had two good races so I’m pleased for him. “I did what I could and I’m happy to finish second.” Guy Bridge came in third in both races to collect the first medal for Great Britain at Qatar 2019, while in fourth was Alexander Bachev (BUL), who made it into the final via a controversial semi-final decider which came down to jury decision after the Bulgarian protested the initial result. Meanwhile Parlier admitted he had hoped for better in the final after a stunning week of racing. 4). 2019 ANOC World Beach Games New Zealander Sam Bullock, who crossed the finish line first, was disqualified for crossing Bachev on the first starboard tack. Bachev was thrilled with the result, despite missing out on a medal. “I’m elated," he said. “It felt so good to be in the final with the rest of the guys. The conditions were tricky, I barely made it through the semi-finals, but I’m super happy to have raced in the finals and it was really great fun.” Men's Kitefoil Racing Gold - Gruber Florian (GER) Silver - Parlier Nicolas (FRA) Bronze - Bridge Guy (GBR) Full results: results.awbgqatar.com
  2. 2019 ANOC World Beach Games

World champion Daniela Moroz sails to gold at ANOC World Beach Games 15 October 2019 1). 2019 ANOC World Beach Games After a stop-start week of competition, on finals’ day there was no holding back for American Daniela Moroz, who stormed to victory in the women’s Kitefoil Racing. The four-time and defending Formula Kite world champion dominated all three days of competition at the ANOC World Beach Games Qatar 2019, winning five of seven opening series races earlier in the week to enter the final as the highest qualifier. This meant she only needed to win one race to grab the gold, which she did in style, leading from the outset to romp to victory over second-placed Julia Damasiewicz (POL). 2). 2019 ANOC World Beach Games “I knew I wanted to go right next to the boat, so I did that really well, and then we had a really big [wind] shift just before the start, so I think I read into that really well and played it off well,” Moroz said after her win. “I’ve won pretty much every title I can get this year which was my goal for the year so I’m really happy with that and it feels awesome. It’s been a really good year, probably the best of my career so far.” Damasiewicz was not disappointed with her showing, coming from behind in the final to overtake semi-final qualifiers Elena Kalinina (RUS) and Breiana Whitehead (AUS) and bag Poland its first medal at the Qatar 2019 Games. 3). 2019 ANOC World Beach Games She said, “Now I’m so happy not really about this second place but about the fact I am closer to Daniela. I am a fan of her and I want to catch her someday. So that’s an amazing feeling, to be so close.” Despite a difficult week, with several delayed and rescheduled races, and the eighth planned opening series race cancelled due to low winds, Moroz was delighted with her experience at the Games. “I just think that I’m out having fun for just another session in the afternoon with a bunch of my friends,” she said, when asked how she copes with changes to the schedule. “We might have to wait, but in the end we’re just having fun.” Tomorrow (16 October), the men will take to their foils for the semi-finals. With Frenchman Nicolas Parlier and Florian Gruber of Germany already through, the 12 highest qualifying competitors from the opening series races will battle it out for two remaining places in the final. 4). 2019 ANOC World Beach Games Guy Bridge (GBR) will be looking to top semi-final group A after both his mother, Steph, and brother, Oliver, failed to make it to the finals, while Brazilian Bruno Lobo will be seeking redemption in group B after he fell from first to third in the dying moments of the seventh and last race yesterday (14 October) after hitting a jellyfish. Semi-finals are scheduled to begin at 14:00, while the final is scheduled for 15:00.
